Ultimately, the Most Valuable Player on your surgical team is you. Preparing properly for your procedure and diligently following postsurgical recovery instructions are vitally important in achieving a safe and optimal surgical outcome.
At Advanced Minimally Invasive Surgery in North New Jersey, Dr. Shomaf Nakhjo has compiled this detailed patient “roadmap” to surgical success. Dr. Nakhjo regards his patients as family members and always wants to provide them with support, peace of mind, and confidence.
Ask questions. Dr, Nakhjo is a great listener. Be candid and forthcoming about your surgical goals and concerns. Don’t hold back!
Dr. Nakhjo will meticulously review your medical history to formulate a “game plan” for your surgery. He will explain the procedure in detail and outline your possible anesthesia options. But keep in mind that a final decision on your anesthesia will not be made until the evening before your surgery. You may be directed to suspend the use of any supplements or medications that could lead to surgical complications.
The period leading up to your surgery can provide a perfect opportunity to strengthen your body and condition your mind.
Identify and confirm a point person to help you through your surgical journey. This “buddy” should be available to provide you with transportation to and from your procedure, as well as personal assistance for at least a day after you get home.
We are here for you. Serving you is our reason for being here. Schedule a consultation with Dr. Nakhjo either by registering here at advancedsurgerynj.com or by calling (973) 383-2222.
Answer all of your anesthesiologist’s questions and feel free to pose any and all questions you would like to.
This is not the time for even mild fibbing. Disclose whether you smoke, drink, use prescription or non-prescription drugs so that your anesthesiologist can determine the type and dose of anesthesia that is the most effective and safest for you.
Make sure you carefully follow your instructions as to when to stop eating and drinking. Pack the following:
Leave your valuables at home, but make sure you have a photo ID. Wear loose clothing that is easy to put on and take off. Check-in time is generally 1-2 hours before your scheduled surgical start time.
After a nurse calls you back to prepare for your surgery, your medical team will confirm your name, date of birth, and the type and anatomical location of your surgery. Your nurse will then start an IV to provide a pathway for your anesthesia.
Following recovery instructions is almost as important as your surgical procedure itself.
Typically, you can shower the day after your surgery. Your doctor will inform you as to if and when surgical dressings need to be removed. Postsurgical infection is the enemy. Clean your hands and incision sites as directed by your doctor.
Dr. Nakhjo will prescribe pain medication as needed and appropriate. Use exactly as directed.
Don’t drive until you are no longer taking any pain medication and you’re able to comfortably get behind the wheel.
We want you to be as active as safely possible after your surgery without “overdoing it.” The quicker you are up and moving, the faster you will recover.
Dr. Nakhjo will provide you with a specific and detailed timeline to return to your job or school, as well as for resuming your normal activity and exercise levels. Follow those instructions diligently.
